1st Grade Classroom Behavior I would like to take this opportunity to familiarize you with our behavior system for behavior management in our classroom. This is similar to the system that your child saw last year in Kindergarten at Saint Charles. This is what it looks like:
Purple: I chose to be outstanding today! Green: I chose to be good & learn today! Yellow: I need to think about it & make a better choice. Red: I made the wrong choices today & tomorrow I will make a good choice.
All students will have a clip with his/her number on it. At the beginning of each day, every student will start out with no color. If he or she breaks a classroom rule they will receive a verbal first warning,. If this behavior continues they will move their clip down to yellow & they will have to speak with me. Then if for some reason the behavior continues he or she will move their clip to red & they will have their lunch & recess with me. I hope that no student will ever reach that point. However, if a student does move their clip to red, you will be contacted via email, note or a phone call. Each night, in your child’s planner under Teacher Notes there will be a purple, green, yellow or red face to let you know their behavior for the day. Please initial this box each night so that I know they are showing you their planner. This system reinforces positive behavior, and forces the student to take responsibility for his or her own actions.
I also do positive reinforcement by giving tally marks to team tables that are working quietly and helping each other. The team table with the most tally marks at the end of the day wins a prize out of my prize box.
If you have any questions or concerns please contact me. Thank you for your cooperation!
Grading in 1st Grade As school falls into its rhythm, you will see papers coming home on a daily basis. In 1st Grade, we are using a special system to grade the students’ work: P, D, N. The letters stand for:
P = Proficient (100%-83%) D = Developing (82%-72%) N = Needs Improvement (71%-0%)
Homework & classroom assignments are each worth 40% of their grade, while a test is worth 60%. At the end of each quarter I will be dropping the lowest assignment (excluding tests) for each student, in all subjects. In 1st Grade I strive to teach the students responsibility and accountability. These character traits will apply to their school career but also to their lives as well. If a missing assignment is not turned in or is turned in after the chapter test then your student will receive a 0% for the assignment. Most of the papers that the students will be bringing home will have a percent and how many were wrong. When your student brings home a paper with a star or check on it please do not be worried, it means that I have looked it over. If you have any question or concerns please contact me via email, a note or by calling the school office.
